Every parcel that leaves your warehouse between Black Friday and Christmas will cost more than the same parcel shipped in October. Not because of a rate increase: because of the peak season surcharge, a flat amount most carriers add per parcel during the year-end peak. At bpost it is €1 excl. VAT per parcel from Friday 27 November to 25 December 2026. At PostNL Belgium, €0.32 from 15 November to 31 December, returns included.
On a domestic parcel that costs you six to seven euros all-in, one euro of surcharge is roughly a 15% increase — precisely in the weeks when you ship the most. And since every carrier sets its own dates and its own amount, the real cost depends on your network mix, not on a single figure.
This article gathers the 2026 peak season surcharges published so far by the carriers Belgian shops use, what they add up to over a real season, and six levers to absorb them. It is written in September because that is when the decisions get made: by November, the carrier mix is frozen.

Two ways to read this table. First: the windows do not line up. DHL Express starts on 1 October internationally, DPD and DHL domestic on 1 November, PostNL on the 15th, bpost only on the 27th. A parcel shipped on 20 November is surcharged at PostNL and DPD, not at bpost. Second: the amounts range from one to three times between comparable networks. That is where the December invoice is decided.
Why carriers charge a year-end surcharge
bpost states it plainly in its FAQ: the surcharge offsets the extra costs of the period — sorting centres open longer, additional rounds, temporary staff, hired vehicles — and aims to encourage a better spread of shipments outside those dates. PostNL gives the same reasoning: temporary storage, extra vehicles, extended sorting hours.
In other words, it is not just a price: it is a signal. The carrier is, in effect, paying you to ship before the window. A merchant who reads the surcharge as a tax to be endured pays it in full. One who reads it as a time-of-day rate moves whatever can be moved.
The surcharge is distinct from two other lines on the same invoice. The energy surcharge (€0.14 per domestic parcel at bpost in 2026, monthly variable at DPD and PostNL) runs all year. And the annual rate increase, which applies on 1 January — we covered it in our analysis of the 2026 rate increases and their effect on margins. All three stack up in December.
Carrier by carrier: what is published for 2026
bpost: €1 per parcel from Black Friday to Christmas
bpost's year-end surcharge is the most legible on the market: €1 excl. VAT per parcel, for all business customers, on every parcel handed over between Black Friday and Christmas Day. For 2026, the window opens on Friday 27 November at 06:00 and closes on Friday 25 December at 06:00.
The detail that matters: the rule is triggered by the parcel's hand-over date, not the order date. An order placed on Thursday 26 November and handed to the carrier on the 27th is surcharged. An order placed on the 26th and shipped the same day is not. Your cut-off time therefore literally decides the price of your parcels on the eve of Black Friday.
PostNL Belgium: €0.32 from 15 November to 31 December, returns included
In Belgium, PostNL applies a surcharge of €0.32 per parcel from 15 November to 31 December 2026. It is three times lower than bpost's, but its window is twice as long and, above all, it applies to every parcel that moves through the network during the period: outbound shipments, shipments abroad and returns. A return generated on 28 December is surcharged.
Note that PostNL's Dutch contracts have their own amount and their own dates. If you ship to the Netherlands through a local account, do not assume the Belgian grid.
DPD: window known, amount in October
DPD announces the principle in its 2026 surcharge list: a seasonal surcharge invoiced automatically on domestic parcels from 1 November to 31 December, deactivated afterwards, with the amount communicated in October. In 2025, the reference on the DPD network was €0.40 per parcel. Put that figure in your budget and correct it when the announcement comes.
DHL Express: per kilo, and from 1 October internationally
DHL Express does not reason per parcel but per billable kilo. For 2026, the domestic surcharge is €0.10 per kg on Time Definite services from 1 November to 31 December. Internationally, the window opens on 1 October 2026 and does not close until 5 February 2027, with amounts from €0.10 to €2.00 per kg depending on the origin-destination pair — €0.50 per kg from Europe to the Americas, for instance. Day Definite services are at €0.15 per kg.
For a shop selling outside the European Union, this is the heaviest surcharge in the table: a 3 kg parcel to the United States costs €1.50 more for four months. If that is your case, our guide to selling to the UK and Switzerland from Belgium covers the postal alternatives.
UPS, GLS and the French networks: no surcharge is not no risk
UPS withdrew its general peak surcharge for payers established in Europe in 2024; only parcels requiring additional handling or classed as large packages remain surcharged in season. GLS Belgium does not publish a flat surcharge, unlike GLS Germany and Austria (€0.50 per parcel during Black Week 2025): it all depends on your contract. And on the French side, neither Colissimo, Chronopost, Mondial Relay nor DPD France has published a peak season surcharge.
Do not read this list as a list of safe havens. A network that does not charge for the peak manages it differently: by lengthening its lead times, closing saturated pickup points, refusing unannounced volumes. The surcharge shows on the invoice; the delay shows in your customer reviews.
What it costs over a real season
Take a Belgian shop shipping 2,500 domestic parcels between 27 November and 24 December, with an average basket of €55 and an all-in shipping cost of €6.50 per parcel.

Between the first and the last line there is over €1,000 of difference in one month, without touching the selling price or the main carrier. Against margin: with 45% gross margin on a €55 basket, each order yields about €24.75; one euro of surcharge absorbs 4% of it. That is not what breaks a season. But added to the energy surcharge, the January increase and the returns wave, it is what explains why so many shops discover in February that their best month in revenue was not their best month in profit.

Six levers to absorb the peak season surcharge
- Smooth shipments ahead of the windows. bpost's surcharge starts on 27 November. A "Black Week" campaign starting on Monday the 23rd sends three days of volume out before the surcharge — provided your warehouse ships the same day. Caution: smoothing does not work against PostNL (15 November) or DPD (1 November), whose windows cover your entire season. It works against bpost, which is also the highest surcharge.
- Shift part of the volume to pickup points. The surcharge follows the network, not the delivery mode — but pickup networks are often the ones with the lowest surcharge, and a pickup point costs less than home delivery anyway. Offering both options at checkout, with pickup listed first during the peak, shifts 30 to 40% of parcels without imposing anything.
- Consolidate multi-parcel orders. The surcharge is per parcel. A two-item order shipped in two parcels pays twice. Holding an incomplete order for a day, or grouping two orders from the same customer placed a few hours apart, saves the surcharge and the postage. - Route parcel by parcel, not contract by contract. A shop with a single carrier account is subject to its grid. A shop — or a provider — with several networks can choose, for each parcel and each day, the one whose all-in cost is lowest that day, surcharge included. At Yaslan, that is what routing across our 30+ carriers does: the peak surcharge becomes a parameter of the calculation, no longer a given.
- Revisit the free-shipping threshold for the season. If your free-shipping threshold is calibrated on a €6.50 shipping cost, it is 15% wrong for five weeks. Two options: raise the threshold temporarily by a few euros, or keep it and own it as a quantified marketing investment. What costs money is not choosing.
- Check the January invoice. Verify that the surcharge was applied on the right dates, on the right number of parcels, and that it disappeared after the window. On returns, PostNL charges it, others do not: the parcel-by-parcel reconciliation takes an hour and regularly recovers several hundred euros.
The most common mistakes
- Budgeting the season on October rates. The surcharge is not a rate increase, so it does not appear in the annual grid. It has to be added by hand to any November-December forecast.
- Believing the surcharge starts on Black Friday everywhere. Only bpost aligns with Black Friday. PostNL, DPD and DHL start earlier.
- Forgetting returns. A returns policy extended to 31 January generates return parcels in December, surcharged on some networks. We quantified that wave in our article on the real cost of e-commerce returns.
- Switching carriers in November to dodge the surcharge. A new carrier account opened mid-season, with no volume history, gets the worst terms on the market — and an onboarding in the middle of the peak. If your grid is bad, the window to switch logistics provider closed in early September.
- Passing the surcharge on to the customer as a "seasonal fee". It is rarely understood and never forgiven. The surcharge is managed in the mix and in the free-shipping threshold, not at checkout.

Does the peak season surcharge also apply to returns?
It depends on the network. PostNL Belgium explicitly applies it to every parcel moving through its network during the period, returns and international shipments included. At bpost, the rule targets parcels handed over during the window, whichever direction they travel. Check your contractual terms and, above all, reconcile your January invoice parcel by parcel.
Can you avoid the surcharge by switching carriers?
Not by avoiding it, by reducing it. Every network has its own dates and its own amount, ranging from one to three times for comparable services. The gain comes from spreading volume across several networks and shipping early ahead of the windows, not from switching carriers mid-season — which would put you in the worst tariff and operational conditions of the year.
Is the surcharge calculated on the order date or the shipping date?
On the date the parcel is handed over to the carrier. An order placed the day before the window opens but handed over the next day is surcharged. That is why your warehouse's cut-off time has a direct effect on the cost of your parcels around 27 November.
Does a logistics provider absorb the peak season surcharge?
The surcharge is set by the carrier and applies to all its customers, providers included. What a provider brings is the ability to route each parcel to the cheapest all-in network that day, terms negotiated on pooled volumes, and no surcharge of its own. At Yaslan, neither a monthly minimum nor a seasonal surcharge appears on the invoice: the only one that exists is the carrier's, and routing is there to minimise it.
Decide in September, not in December
The peak season surcharge is the only fourth-quarter cost item whose amount, dates and rule you already know. All it asks is to be taken into account before the carrier mix is frozen — which means now.
